Wood Chips Are Great For The Garden, But Don't Compost THIS Kind!
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
Wood chips are a cheap and effective material for creating compost & healthier soil. But there are some types of wood that you need to watch out for, like the one I show you in this video. Woods like this are resistant to decay and may not make the best addition to a compost heap. Luckily, these woods are easy to identify, and they still make a fine mulch for other purposes. Don't Forget This Critical Ingredient When Composting With Coffee Grounds
Great walk through!
Using molasses isn’t the most efficient way to build a solid eco system of microbes, use kelp meal or even bee pollen from a health food store for the potassium to feeds the microbes
6:39 you know when somebody likes worms when his mouth is watering just from thinking about a “ball of worms” 😂. GREAT VIDEO! 👍🏻
Do they regularly crawl through the holes? How far do they get?
If they grow in the wild does it mean they grew from seeds?
👍🏽Thank you great video
I think that if those grounds weren't organic, that may have a lot to do with it.
Cold lacto-fermented composting (the improved Water Witte method) is a better method. It does not have the 2 adverse effects of hot composting (which is not practiced by nature): 1. The resulting compost is less than half the weight of the original pile. It's a sorry loss of carbon due to the decomposition activity of aerobic microorganisms, which unfortunately emits a lot of CO2, a greenhouse gas. So it's a polluting method. Besides the loss of carbon is a waste for the fertility of our soil. 2. The resulting compost contains few microorganisms because of the high temperature, so is of little use to soil fertility. Cold lacto-fermented composting uses anaerobic microorganisms and the result is compost with virtually no carbon loss (so it's non-polluting) and, since it's made cold, it contains an enormous diversity of microorganisms useful for soil fertility. Everybody should practice the cold lacto-fermented composting because it does not require to turn the pile, it is less work. However, it takes a little bit more time to obtain a well decomposed compost ready to put in the garden but it is worth it.
Impractical Joker
will the worms not go to the lowest container where the tea drops?
Another comment he replied to said that yes, a few get stuck in the bottom, but it's never impacted overall population
Did you throw the bag away to keep them from spreading? Oh that smell is horrid.
Just add your cardboard toilet rolls to your kitchen waste bin and then it's ready for the worms when you put it into the compost pile.
Everyone acts like they get rid of coffee spent grounds whenever I come through. I know a lot of people throw theirs away and could give them away. They just don't want to give to me 😞😞😞
That's some hard work you putting in there😁👍🏾 I'm due to turn mine over
You basically said to mix the proper amounts of browns and greens (coffee grounds) to get compost. Cardboard will do the same as wood chips.
Uncle Jim- He looks like Earthworm 🪱 Jim 😂
Shout out to Wicked Bao!
Good video. Informative. I have an input. I make rice wine and in 50 days that wine gets ready.. I'm left with rice pulp processed by the bacteria that makes the wine . The Chinese make a cake out of that. I'm sure the worms without teeth 😁 will eat it. It's sweet and fermented. Can we experiment with that?
Haha the birds will beat you to it every time! 😂
The unsulpherated molasses feeds the good fungi
Can these be left inside rather than outside?
We have been getting chipped osage orange wood and someone said it has a chemical that retards growth (also someone else said that coffee grounds are inhibitors)? I'm going to spread them on the byways.
how do you prevent other bugs from going into the air holes?
You don't.
I use wood chips, kitchen scraps, leaves, paper shreds, and coffee grounds. When I dig up the pile in the spring, my pile is full of worms. This past spring I took compost, just made it the top layer of a raised bed where I planted and grew squash and had the best squash harvest ever.
How do you differentiate eggs from castings?
side note for bucket searchers. If you live near a Firehouse subs they sell 5 gallon buckets with lids for $3 and the $ goes to charity. I container garden and I use their buckets for all my larger crops like tomatoes, peppers, etc. Nice buckets and excellent charity. Making a couple of these towers this weekend.
how does the worm factory differ from the worm composter? will the worms not reproduce in the compost set up?
It's one of my favorite plants I have about 25 in my garden they provide good shade also love to cook with them very yummy.
There's small coffe factory in front of my store , today I asked for the coffee grounds that they usually throw away.
Is there a different common name for these? I’ve never heard of them, and am old…. Totally was surprised 😂 Do they taste and get used the same as the typical artichoke?
May be funny questions but I truly am curious - 1. Over winter, do people still leave things out to catch them? If so, is it a different setup or the same? 2. If I buy worms and create this to do inside, will it smell and also - lol - do they get out of the buckets? I have 2 cats and a dog so wanting to make sure I make an educated choice. 3. Do the buckets work better than digging ground to put a “trap” for lack of better words
Wow realy cool never rhought of this
How can I contact you please? (email maybe?)
K, You did a great job! However forgive my overthinking, can worms still go upward if they don't have anything to go through, like if there is an air gap between the different buckets? Do they use the wall of the buckets as something to cling to?
Yes.
Also important to note that you don't need a whole lot to bridge the gap from bucket to bucket. Iirc they nest with only about 4" space between the two. If you're really concerned about it, build up material enough that the upper bucket is resting on material in the lower bucket. Just don't build TOO high or it may reduce stability
I used this method today
Hello Andrew, great information. Thank you.
Uncle Jim is incredibly proud of his red maggots at $75 per pound. I'm converting my gourmet pork herd to red wrigglers...starting with the dead gilt! Either "Uncle Jim" is "Jackass Jim", or I should make changes to my farm model pronto! How many multi-millionaire worm farmers are there? Can anyone help with stats or data. Yep....not so many.
I see your hairstyle. I’m now subscribed. People confident enough to pull that off usually know what they’re talking about.
😂
Love this guy!
Earthworm Jim!
I'm a newbie and want to start this vermicomposting but I live in a small apartment. Would this 5 gallon bucket system work ok indoors without attracting bugs or odors?
Got turned on to pigeon peas by AP and really enjoy them in my pea soup, I add them to the completed soup when reheating and they add a little bit of a crunch to the soup. Quick question, can I cut down the plant, cover with mulch to over winter it?

Hello good morning, thank you fir sharing your idea about how you protect guava fruits without chemicals on it. I just wanna know whats the name of plastic bag you wrap on guava fruits to avoid pest,
I give up trying separating them there was no way to separate them I don't know how you do it but it was a pain in the butt I have to cut them open
Put a large wood block in each layer to stop the buckets from nestling too tightly.
Liquid fungal cultures are created from sugar water. Why would it be different for compost tea?
If bacteria get into fungal cultures they turn into bacterial cultures instead lol. I have often wondered about this myself; if you add sugar, bacteria are going to outcompete saprophytic fungi. It's not about whether fungi use sugar, but which organisms are advantaged more by free sugar. As the CC said, the fungi have access to more enzymes than bacteria, but the drawback to that is that their genes are larger and more numerous and hence they reproduce much more slowly. But then again, the advice I usually hear is to not let the tea brew for more than 24 hours, so maybe within that time constaint competition doesnt become an issue? idk Id like a satisfying answer to the question at the heart of this whole controversy, too.
